Trustees That Care

We support the use of technology in our children’s schools and agree there is tremendous value in providing access to the internet. We feel this can be accomplished more safely without the unnecessary constant bombardment of microwave radiation.

As the October 27th election approaches, we call upon all school board trustee candidates to educate themselves on the issue and commit to the following 4 actions if elected. We request you implement the following 4 actions to provide for a safer environment for students and teachers:

  1. Allow teachers to turn the Wi-Fi router off in their classroom when access to the internet is not required.
  2. Create an education and safety program for students and teachers on how to use this technology more safely.
  3. Post the warnings written by the manufacturers of the devices contained in the product information of the Wi-Fi devices your Board has installed, as well as cell phones and tablets used in the classroom. Your students and teachers should be aware that the manufacturers do not deem the products to be safe in all situations.
  4. In your decision to deploy Wi-Fi in your schools, you are relying on Health Canada’s Safety Code 6. Invest the time to understand the significant flaws in the process Health Canada uses in its update of SC6. Here is the letter written to Health Canada Minister Ambrose outlining concerns with the process used to update Safety Code 6, including 140 studies ignored by Health Canada.

The World Health Organization Classifies RF Exposure (Wi-Fi) as a Class 2B Carcinogen

In May of 2011, the IARC (International Association for Research on Cancer) declared radio frequency radiation as a possible cause of cancer. Click HERE for official document. Since then Federal, provincial, and municipal health authorities in Canada have made the FALSE claim that the IARC declaration of RF as a possible human carcinogen refers ONLY to mobile phones. This is not and has never been the case. Wi-Fi and all RF-EMF emitting devices are included in this grouping.

Why The Confusion

IARC does not classify devices, they classify exposures. The 2B designation therefore applies to all RF-EMF exposures, regardless of the source. It isn’t the physical source that is being evaluated; it’s the type of emission that exits from any source, that is being evaluated.

Confirmation from IARC

In this video clip (click HERE) Dr. Jonathan M Samet, MD, University of Southern California, Chairman of the Working Group, states at the 3.12 minute mark “the designation of class 2B RF-EMFs is unspecified as to source, class 2B has broad applicability to sources that emit RF-EMFs".

Confirmation from Dr Robert A Baan PhD, Responsible Officer, Monograph 102 on RF-EMF, The IARC Monographs, IARC, Lyon, FRANCE

“Many other devices emit the same type of RF radiation, e.g.,base-station antennas, radio/tv antennas, WiFi stations, smart meters, etc. Therefore, all these fall under the same broad evaluation of “Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields.” Click HERE to read.

School Boards Rely on Health Canada’s Fundamentally Flawed (and Mysteriously Edited) RF Exposure Guideline SAFETY CODE 6

Health Canada has a guideline - Safety Code 6, which recommends limits for safe human exposure to RF electromagnetic energy. It was created in 1979 to protect federal workers on federal jobsites, not children in schools. It is based on 6 minutes of exposure, and is being used across Canada to rollout WiFi in classrooms.

It is disturbing to note that Health Canada historically did recognize that some people get sick from microwave radiation. But in the last “update” of the Safety Code in 2009, the only significant change was to delete the single sentence that read:

"Certain members of the general public may be more susceptible to harm from RF and microwave exposure."

This acknowledgement that some people are susceptible to harm from wireless radiation had been part of the safety code for more than a decade. It vanished about the same time Wi-Fi was rolled-out into all schools and offices.

For over 2 years, C4ST has expressed concern that Safety Code 6 has not kept up with the science and does not provide Canadians adequate protection. Read the letter C4ST sent to Health Minister Rona Ambrose On July 16th, 2014 (the day after the public consultation closed) outlining our concerns around Safety Code 6 and the process used to keep it current.

C4ST, in conjunction with the Environmental Health Unit of Women’s College Hospital, held a Symposium for MD’s and other health care practitioners entitled “Health issues associated with exposure to electromagnetic fields and microwave radiation.”

“During the course of this symposium Dr. Anthony Miller argues the classification should be 2A, probable carcinogenic to humans. Dr. Miller also reviews the recent studies that link wireless radiation to breast and brain cancer. Dr. Davis presents the latest research showing the impact on sperm fertility as well as the connection with wireless radiation exposure and impaired childhood development. Dr. Hugh Taylor reviews his research showing the offspring of pregnant mice exposed to cell phones during pregnancy developed “ADHD-like” symptoms. Dr. Havas reviews the pre-conditions she has observed for electro sensitivity and handed out the Austrian Medical Association “Guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of EMF related health problems and illnesses.” Mr Frank Clegg reviews the current situation in Canada re Health Canada and Safety Code 6.

Full presentations including Q/A sessions with each panellist, as well as supporting documentation can be viewed HERE.
